Keeping your location information updated in Microsoft Teams is essential to ensure proper routing of 911 calling. Here are three scenarios you may encounter when calling 911:

  • Location not detected - Will use the address defined by IT for your primary office location. This is hard-set and may or may not be where you currently are located. You will talk to the 911 call center responsible for serving the area of your primary office. If this is not where you are located, they will not be able to send emergency services.

  • Partial address - Will route to a relay center. They cannot help you in an emergency. Their job is only to get an address from your verbally over the phone, so they can transfer you to a 911 call center. If you can't talk to them on the phone, they will not be able to route your call. They also cannot send assistance, so response time will be slowed down. A partial address can be any address that does not contain a street number, street name, city, state, country, and zip code.

  • Full address - Will route to the 911 call center that services that address. If you have an incorrect address, you may be connected to the wrong 911 call center, and they will be unable to provide you with emergency services. A full address contains a street number, street name, city, state, country, and zip code.

In addition to a full address, legal regulations require we provide a building and room with location information sent to a 911 call center. Make sure when you edit your location in Teams, you add the building and room number. Use abbreviations where appropriate, the call center can only see a specified number of characters (keep it short, but helpful).

Editing location information is currently only available on the Teams desktop app.

To add, edit, or confirm your location in Microsoft Teams desktop app:

  1. In Microsoft Teams, go to the "Calls" tab.
  2. Below the dial pad, near the bottom, click on the location information line.
  3. Depending on what location is currently set, you will have the add, edit, confirm, or reset options appear in a pop-up menu. Choose the appropriate option needed.
  4. If adding or editing an address, be sure to enter in all information and save or confirm. Don't forget to provide a building, floor, room number, or any other information that could help emergency services find your location (keep it short).
