The iPad will walk through the setup process, but there are a couple of things to note before beginning the process. The most important of which is the Apple ID type to use, please read carefully and decide before finishing setup.

First Login Screen:

  • The first login screen will ask for your NCMC email and portal password.
  • This login will also require multifactor authentication, so make sure to have your phone handy.

Manually Setting Up:

  • One of the setup screens will ask to setup the iPad using another device, but there is an option to manually set up the iPad.
  • Please choose to manually set up the iPad, as this ensures there are no issues with connecting to your student account or any conflicts with required policies.

Apple ID's:

  • Another setup screen will ask for an Apple ID.
  • Do not continue with an Apple ID until reading the difference between the two types of Apple ID's.
  • There is an option to use multiple accounts, make sure to click this option if choosing to use a Managed Apple ID.
    • If using a Managed Apple ID, make sure to use a personal Apple ID for the App Store, which will be the second account it asks you to set up if using the multiple accounts option.

Managed Apple ID:

  • Provided automatically, no registration or creation required.
  • Uses the same password as your NCMC portal account.
  • Password can be reset by the college.
  • Owned by the college, forever.
  • Provides free benefits as part of the college Apple ID. These benefits may change or become non-existent and are provided directly by Apple.
  • Cannot install apps from the App Store. Do not use this type of account for the App Store.
  • Personal pictures, chats, etc. are not synced to your iPad. This makes your iPad less personal and more "school only."
  • This ID type is recommended if you do not want to mix your personal Apple environment (pictures, chats, etc.) but should not be used for the App Store account.

Personal Apple ID:

  • Must be created on your own using a non-NCMC account. Do not use your school email.
  • Password is not synced with your NCMC portal account, which means they may not be the same, depending on what you set it to.
  • Password cannot be reset by the college. If you need it reset, you will have to go through Apple's process or be locked out of your account.
  • Owned by you, not the college.
  • No free, college offered benefits. Any additional account subscriptions must be purchased by you.
  • Full access to the App Store. Any apps purchased on account stay with your account and are potentially available on your other personal devices.
  • Personal pictures, chats, etc. are automatically synced to your iPad. This makes your college iPad more personal.
  • This ID type is recommended if you plan to use the Apple ecosystem for your personal use and for using the App Store.

What does NCMC IT recommend?

We recommend using a personal Apple ID because the goal is for you to graduate from the Nursing program, then keep the iPad as your own device. If completing the program, the iPad is then released from the college and becomes fully yours. If using a managed Apple ID, the account tied to the iPad will always belong to the college, even though the device doesn't anymore. This may cause problems in the future because the college may revoke access to your student account for various reasons in the future.

If you choose to use a Managed Apple ID though, you can still remove that account and add a personal one after graduating, but it can be a little bit of work to make sure all your documents, pictures, chats, etc. are moved over to your personal account. This is why it is important to decide ahead of time during setup, so it isn't a lot of work later for you.
